What does a sports massage feel like?

A quick look at how you move, then focused work on the legs, hips, back or shoulders that feel tightest. Expect firm pressure, assisted stretches, and simple stretches to do at home.

Who is sports massage for?

  • Runners with tight calves, hamstrings or hips
  • Gym-goers and lifters between heavy sessions
  • Cyclists, swimmers and footballers
  • Builders, carers and anyone on their feet all day

What happens during your sports massage

  • A short chat first. What hurts, any injuries or health conditions, and how firm you like the pressure.
  • Time to get ready alone. Undress to the level you are comfortable with and lie under a towel.
  • Your treatment. Only the area being worked on is uncovered. Ask for lighter or firmer pressure at any point.
  • A few quiet minutes after. Water, time to come round, and simple aftercare tips.

Sports massage questions

Can I book if I have a health condition or take medicine?

Usually. The NHS advises telling any therapist about medical conditions and all the medicines you take, and seeing a GP about symptoms that do not go away or keep coming back. Source: NHS: Herbal medicines and complementary therapies

Do I need to play sport to book a sports massage?

No. Sports massage suits anyone with tight, overworked muscles, whether that's from the gym or a long week at a desk.

When should I book around a race or event?

Many people book a few days before an event and again a few days after, rather than the day itself. Tell your therapist your plans when you book.

What should I wear?

Shorts are ideal if we're working on your legs. You stay covered with towels apart from the area being worked on.

Does sports massage hurt?

It can feel intense on very tight areas, but it shouldn't be sharply painful. Say so at any point and the pressure is eased.

How often should I have a sports massage?

It depends on your training. Some people book every few weeks during heavy training blocks. Ask your therapist what suits your plans.

Can sports massage help with an injury?

Tell your therapist about any injury before your session. For a new, severe or worsening injury, see your GP or a physiotherapist first.

Is 30 minutes long enough?

30 minutes suits one area, such as calves and hamstrings. Choose 60 minutes to cover more.

Can I train after a sports massage?

Light movement is fine. Give worked muscles the rest of the day before a hard session.
