Your first massage: exactly what to expect
At your first massage you will have a short chat about what hurts and how firm you like the pressure, then you are left alone to undress to the level you are comfortable with. You stay covered with towels the whole time, and you can ask for lighter or firmer pressure at any point.

Before you arrive
- Eat lightly an hour or two before, rather than a big meal.
- Wear something comfortable. Shorts help for sports massage on your legs.
- Arrive five minutes early so you are not rushing in with your heart racing.
- Have a list of any medical conditions and medicines ready. Your therapist will ask.
The first five minutes
Your therapist asks what brought you in, where you feel tight or sore, any injuries or health conditions, and whether you have had a massage before. This is the moment to say if any area is off limits, or if you are nervous. Nobody will think twice about it.
Getting ready
You are left alone to undress to the level you are happy with. Most people keep their underwear on. You lie on the table under a towel or sheet, usually face down first. Your therapist knocks before coming back in.
During the massage
Only the area being worked on is uncovered. Your therapist checks the pressure early on. If anything is too firm, too light, too cold or simply uncomfortable, say so. You can talk or stay quiet, whatever helps you relax. Falling asleep is completely normal.
Afterwards
Your therapist leaves you to get up slowly and dress. Take your time, have some water, and expect to feel loose and a little slow for a while. You may be tender in the areas worked on for a day or so. Our aftercare guide covers what helps.
If you have a health condition
The NHS advises telling any therapist about medical conditions and all the medicines you take before treatment, and seeing a GP about symptoms that persist or keep coming back. If you are pregnant, read about pregnancy massage.
