Massage aftercare: what to do in the 24 hours after

After a massage, take it slowly, drink when you are thirsty, keep moving gently and avoid hard training for the rest of the day. Feeling a little tender in the areas worked on for a day or so is common after firmer massage.

Straight after your massage

Sit up slowly and take a minute before you stand. Take your time, have some water, and give yourself a few quiet minutes before heading back out into Brighton.

The rest of the day

  • Keep moving gently. A walk along the seafront beats sitting at a desk for the afternoon.
  • Skip hard training. Give worked muscles the rest of the day before a heavy session.
  • Have a warm bath or shower if you feel stiff later on.
  • Go easy on alcohol and get an early night if you can.

Is it normal to feel sore after a massage?

After deep tissue or sports massage, some tenderness in the areas worked on for a day or so is common, a bit like after a good workout. It should ease steadily. If pain is sharp or getting worse, contact your therapist. The NHS advises seeing a GP about symptoms that do not go away or keep coming back. Between sessions

Your therapist may show you a couple of simple stretches for the areas that were tightest. A few minutes a day helps, and so does changing whatever caused the tension in the first place: screen height, chair, training load.

When to book again

There is no fixed rule. Some people book monthly to stay on top of tension, others only when something flares up. Ask your therapist what they suggest for your situation, and see all treatments and prices.

Questions people ask

Should I drink water after a massage?

Drink when you are thirsty, as you would on any other day. Having some water straight after a massage simply helps you feel more settled before you leave.

Can I go to the gym after a massage?

Light movement is fine, but give worked muscles the rest of the day before hard training.

Can I shower after a massage?

Yes. A warm shower or bath can feel good, and helps if any oil is left on your skin.

Why do I feel tired after a massage?

Lying still and relaxed for an hour leaves many people feeling slow and sleepy. Plan a quiet evening if you can.
