What does a deep tissue massage feel like?

Your therapist starts broad and warm, then slows right down and leans into the spots that have been nagging you for weeks. Some moments feel intense. The pressure can feel like a good ache, the kind that makes you breathe out properly for the first time all day.

Who is deep tissue massage for?

  • Shoulders and neck that tighten up at a desk
  • A lower back that aches by the end of the day
  • Knots that stretching and foam rolling haven't shifted
  • Anyone who finds a relaxing massage too light

What happens during your deep tissue massage

  • A short chat first. What hurts, any injuries or health conditions, and how firm you like the pressure.
  • Time to get ready alone. Undress to the level you are comfortable with and lie under a towel.
  • Your treatment. Only the area being worked on is uncovered. Ask for lighter or firmer pressure at any point.
  • A few quiet minutes after. Water, time to come round, and simple aftercare tips.

Deep tissue massage questions

Can I book if I have a health condition or take medicine?

Usually. The NHS advises telling any therapist about medical conditions and all the medicines you take, and seeing a GP about symptoms that do not go away or keep coming back. Source: NHS: Herbal medicines and complementary therapies

Does deep tissue massage hurt?

It can feel intense on very tight areas, but it shouldn't be painful. Tell your therapist at any point and the pressure is eased straight away.

What's the difference between deep tissue and sports massage?

Deep tissue focuses on slow, firm pressure into long-held tension. Sports massage mixes firm work with stretching and is aimed at training, recovery and how you move.

How will I feel afterwards?

Looser, often a little tender in the areas worked on, a bit like after a good workout. Drink water and keep moving gently.

How often should I have a deep tissue massage?

There is no fixed rule. Some people book monthly to keep on top of tension, others only when it builds up. Ask your therapist what suits you.

Can I have deep tissue massage with a bad back?

Often, yes. Tell your therapist about the problem first. The NHS says to see a GP if back pain has not improved after treating it at home for a few weeks, and to ask for an urgent GP appointment or get help from 111 if it is severe pain that starts suddenly, or is getting worse quickly. Is 30 minutes long enough?

30 minutes works well for one area, such as your back, neck and shoulders. Choose 60 minutes for a full body massage.

What should I wear?

Whatever is comfortable. You undress to the level you are happy with and stay covered with towels throughout.

Can I have deep tissue massage while pregnant?

Book a pregnancy massage instead. It is adapted for pregnancy, with you lying on your side.
